Tools and Hardware Reviews of Zircon StudSensor i65 Center-Finding Stud Finder with DVD How-To GuideCustomer Review: Didn't work for me Summary: 1 StarsI was looking forward to receiving this stud finder as I've been waiting to hang my plasma on the wall for too long a time. It arrived in the usual plastic packaging, you know the type, where you have to use a sharp knife to open it and almost end up losing a digit in the process.
Once safely opened, I put it to task straight away. I watched the dvd that came with it to see how to use it to maximum effect - the dvd was ok but more of a gimmick than particularly useful. The only real thing I learnt was to 'double-click' on the button to choose a stronger scan depth.
I placed the i65 near to where I thought a stud would be (based on where an electrical outlet was) and began scanning. First use picked up the edge of a stud, then the center, the laser flashed and the alarm sounded. Great, I thought. That was so easy. Almost too easy. For piece of mind I decided to check for the same stud but approach it from the other side. Again, I started near to where I thought the stud would be and started sliding... SLOWLY. It picked up an edge and then the center again.
Unfortunately, this time the center was about four inches to the right of where the first stud was found. For the next 45 mins or so I spent time trying to find the dead center of the studs needed to hang my flat-screened behemoth. Each time with a different result. In the end I gave up on it and decided to use the old "pilot hole and coat hanger wire" method. This was far messier but much faster and provided me with comfort, safe in the knowledge that I was actually hanging my precious baby on solid wood rather then weak drywall. Something of a necessity when living in anywhere near the San Andreas Fault.
Some other, seperate issues I found were that the unit itself could be easily tilted in either direction whilst scanning so that it ended up not scanning flush against the wall. This had a considerable effect on the scanning result. Also, I found that if you place your other hand on the top of the unit whilst scanning, to try and steady the tilting issue mentioned above, then this would also affect the scan result. Not good.
Reading some of the other reviews, it looks like people have difficulty with textured walls and/or thick dry wall. I have both of these so it looks like I may have to try and return this. Can I really be bothered finding out how to return this for the sake of $30 or will I just keep it in the bottom of the toolbox?
Before you buy this I'd suggest you check if you have thicker than normal walls and to also consider the wall texture you will be scanning.
